Grade 5 Math Packet

Dear Parents and Students:

Summer work, such as math packets and novel reading, can be useful in achieving grade-level mastery and “bridging” the gap between school years. We believe that any assigned summer work should be appropriate and purposeful.

This summer math packet was developed to provide students entering fifth grade an opportunity to review grade level math objectives and to improve math performance. We hope this helps to build anticipation for new learning and give students confidence in their abilities so that they are well prepared for the next level of math. This packet will help ease the transition and help reinforce skills that are needed prior to the start of fifth grade to ensure future success.

Download the packet here. We are also providing the answer key, so that student progress can be monitored throughout the summer.

Thank you for your continued support and have a great summer!

Summer Reading Information

BMS librarian Ms. Woznick has met with all 5th, 6th and 7th grade classes about summer reading requirements. Mrs. Fecteau, the BHS librarian, visited 8th grade classes to review BHS requirements.

We are asking all students entering grades 6, 7 and 8 to read TWO books this summer.
  • One book should be from the lists we provide (unless a student has received other instructions from a teacher)
  • One book should be a graphic novel of the student's choosing.
Students should create ONE response piece after reading the book selected from the summer reading list. There will be a number of different choices for response pieces, which will be available by next week. There is no assignment connected with the graphic novel; students will simply record the title and author and may be asked one or two brief questions about the book in September.

This year, in order to give students broader choices, the BMS and BHS book lists are labeled as "recommended" for grades 5 and up, grades 7 and up or grades 9 and up. Students at either school may select a book off of any one of these three listsHowever, parents and students should be aware that some subject matter or reading levels from lists that are higher than what is recommended for a student's grade may or may not be appropriate, depending on the child.  And books that are on lower grade reading lists are not necessarily "easier." We encourage you to be an active participant in your child's summer reading selection -- consider reading the book yourself or listen to an audiobook as a family.

Note: There are no summer reading requirements for students entering grade 5. They are strongly encouraged to read off the grade 5+ list we provide and/or the public library list, and to participate in the Beverly Public Library summer reading program in the children's room.

Information about summer reading is posted at https://beverlymssummerreading.blogspot.com/ and will be updated regularly.

Gr 7 - Summer Math Packet

Dear Parents and Students:

Summer work, such as math packets and novel reading, can be useful in achieving grade-level mastery and “bridging” the gap between school years. We believe that any assigned summer work should be appropriate and purposeful. This summer math packet was developed to provide students entering eighth grade an opportunity to review grade-level math objectives and to improve math performance. We hope this helps to build anticipation for new learning and give students confidence in their abilities so that they are well prepared for the next level of math. This packet can help ease the transition and help reinforce skills that are needed prior to the start of eighth grade to ensure future success.

The attached math packet is a set of problems all students entering grade eight are REQUIRED to complete as a way to assist in transitioning to eighth grade. You should plan to do one topic a week for 6 weeks of summer break. These packets are due on Wednesday, September 4, the second day back at school.

Thank you for your continued support and have a great summer!

BMS Spanish Lip Synch a Huge Success!

The BMS Spanish department is proud to announce that after each dollar, quarter and penny was counted, our BMS Spanish Lip Sync raised a grand total of $1,439.20! Every cent is being donated to ODIS (Open Door Immigration Services). This organization which helps provide affordable legal services to immigrants in our community is very near and dear to our hearts. They are so appreciative of the BMS community.

We cannot thank everyone enough for the generous donations of snacks, refreshments, candy, and baked goods for our concessions. We are also endlessly thankful to the PTO and parent volunteers who manned our concession stand until late into the night. We are so thankful of the contributions and support so many of you gave to help make this night a success!

We are immensely proud of all the dedicated students who made this happen.

Gr 8 - Drumline & Colorguard Event Tonight

Grade 8 students - if you're interested in drumline or color guard at BHS, check out the annual drumline and color guard meet and greet event. This is an evening in June that we always set aside to welcome any 8th grade drummers and/or color guard enthusiasts who are trying to figure out their role within the marching band this fall. It’s a very low-key, informal event.

This year's event is on Monday 6/10 from 6:00-7:30 in the BHS Band Room and field house. Students should be dropped off and picked up by Door 11, adjacent to the athletic fields.

Percussionists will be able to meet our instructors and current drumline members during this get together, as well as try out all of the equipment used during marching band season.

Color guard enthusiasts will also be able to meet the instructor and current members, as well as learn some basic flag twirling maneuvers and learn about the color guard's important role within the marching band.

Questions? Contact Mr. Costa at amcosta@beverlyschools.org.
