Book of the Day: Let's Celebrate Juneteenth

Let's Celebrate Emancipation Day and Juneteenth by Barbara Derubertis

Juneteenth
From Hoopla: "In the 1800s, abolitionists like Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and Sojourner Truth fought for freedom from slavery for all African Americans. They fought with speeches, songs, newspapers, and even with daring rescue missions! Every year on both Emancipation Day and Juneteenth we honor and continue their fight for freedom and equality. Holidays & Heroes brings to life the people whose holidays we celebrate throughout the year. Enriched with colorful historical images, books in this series will engage children in the stories behind our holidays and the people they honor"

BMS Librarian Ms. Woznick is recommending a book a day! All Books of the Day are available online. You can get Let's Celebrate Emancipation Day and Juneteenth as an ebook from Hoopla if you have a Beverly Public Library Card. Want a physical book? Now you can reserve books for pickup at the library too -- or check with Copper Dog Books or the Book Shop of Beverly Farms.

Book of the Day: Rooting for Rafael Rosales

Rooting for Rafael Rosales by Kurtis Scaletta

Rooting for Rafael Rosales
From Hoopla: "Rafael has dreams. Every chance he gets he plays in the street games trying to build his skills, get noticed by scouts, and-someday-play Major League Baseball. Maya has worries. The bees are dying all over the world, and the company her father works for is responsible, making products that harm the environment. Follow Rafael and Maya in a story that shifts back and forth in time and place, from Rafael's neighborhood in the Dominican Republic to present-day Minnesota, where Maya and her sister are following Rafael's first year in the minor leagues. In their own ways, Maya and Rafael search for hope, face difficult choices, and learn a secret-the same secret-that forever changes how they see the world."

Summer Reading is Now Summer Stories!

In summer 2020 we want Beverly Middle School students to spend time interacting with different stories - and creating some of their own. Stories can live in books, but they live in lots of other places too. We want you to explore the many ways that we create and share stories. Go to the website at summerstories.beverlyschools.org. (Note there is a section in Spanish!)

See this sheet for more information and also don't forget to check out Summer Reading at the Beverly Public Library for kids, teens and adults!

Summer Stories Expectations
Students should pick at least one activity (but hopefully many!) from each of the two choice boards on the website. One is labeled Read - Listen - Watch. Those choices are about consuming stories (reading books or other text, audio and digital stories, etc.). The other is labeled Connect - Create - Share; here, you use stories to make connections with your own life and with other people. If all those choices are a little too much for you, try the Streamlined Choice Board.

Students can track their stories to show to their ELA teacher in the fall. Students in grades 6-8 should expect to complete other activities relating to Summer Stories on returning to school in September. These assignments will be part of the Q1 grade.

You can pick the book up at Beverly High School on Tuesday or Friday morning, the same times that food is available for pickup. A confirmation email will be sent you to about the day it will be available for contactless pickup. Books will be put into in a plain paper bag with your name on it and placed in the vestibule outside the cafeteria. If you are unable to get to the high school to pick it up, you will have an option to provide your address so it can be delivered to your home (Beverly only). This may take a little longer.

BMS Digital Spring Concert

You can now watch the Beverly Middle School June 2020 Spring Concert! This video features the 5-8 Bands, Choruses, String Ensembles, Jazz Band and a few soloists!

Please note in addition to the students you see on the screen, we had students who preferred not to be filmed, so only their audio is included. The visuals that you see may not be all of the students who contributed to their ensemble's performance! We hope you enjoy!

Gr 8: June 18th Move-On Celebration Reminders

Here's a quick recap and some reminders about the last day of school for BHS 8th graders on Thursday, June 18, 2020.

Book of the Day: They Called Us Enemy

They Called Us Enemy by George Takei

Description From Hoopla: "George Takei has captured hearts and minds worldwide with his captivating stage presence and outspoken commitment to equal rights.
