Message from the Superintendent

A message from our Superintendent, Sue Charochak, went out via email on Thursday afternoon and is replicated here for your reference:

Good Afternoon Beverly School Community,

I am writing to you today with an update regarding our District Reopening planning process. On February 24th, the School Committee met to begin considering options to increase in person learning as part of the transition to a return to full in person learning in Beverly. Our goal throughout the year has consistently been the safe return of as many students as possible to in-person school settings. We cannot underscore the benefits of attending school in person and the positive impact it has on students’ mental and social emotional health.

In considering all options, the district is engaged in consultation with our local public health experts, including the Beverly Public Health Department, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Massachusetts chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the state Department of Public Health. The Beverly school community, staff, students, parents and families, have all been vigilant in implementing all our key mitigation strategies including face coverings, distancing, hand hygiene, and staying home when you are experiencing symptoms or have had a risk of exposure. We will continue to work together to ensure these standards are met and that we are doing everything we can as a district to keep students and staff safe and healthy.

Our next step is to survey parents and staff to better understand their preferences moving forward with respect to in-person learning models. We acknowledge that parents value in-person learning and are also cognizant of the importance of protecting the health of our staff and students, which has been our paramount concern over the last year and will remain so going forward. Parents that have elected to participate in the Remote Learning Academy will have the opportunity to remain in that model through the end of the school year.

Yesterday’s announcement by the state’s Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education, Jeffrey Riley, served as an affirmation of our goal to expand in-person learning. Beverly has addressed the challenges of this pandemic from the beginning with the closure in March of 2020, finding innovative ways to keep students engaged in their learning. We are committed to that same innovative approach in the next phase, our transition to full-time in-person learning. We will continue to work collaboratively with all of our stakeholders — teachers, students, staff, families, healthcare providers and public health experts — to safely expand in-person learning, and we will make every effort to keep you all engaged and informed throughout this process.

Sue Charochak, Ed.D.

School Vacation Feb. 15-19

There are no classes -- in-person or remote -- from Monday, February 15 through Friday, February 19 in observance of Presidents' Day and our annual February vacation week.

Plan Your Outfits - Color Wars Next Thurday & Friday

The Beverly Middle School Peer Leaders are planning a spirit day in order to raise money for a local cause. Thursday, February 11th & Friday, February 12th we will have a schoolwide GRADE COLOR WARS! Students can bring in $1 (or more!) to wear the color assigned to their grade. Anything goes - shirt, pants, or accessories! The more COLOR the better! All money raised will be donated to Family Promise in Beverly.

Family Promise North Shore Boston’s mission is to prevent and end family homelessness through a family-centered, community-based response. They aim to uphold each family's dignity and strength as they accompany families in preventing, navigating, or recovering from situations of homelessness, and to engage the local community as critical partners in this effort.

Our goal is to raise awareness for this local organization and raise as much money as possible to help support families in our community! The grade who raises the most money will win the GRADE COLOR WARS competition and our BMS principals will participate in an exciting surprise!

We hope many students will participate in this fun and friendly competition before heading off for February vacation!
Grade 5 - wear ORANGE

Grade 6 - wear GREEN

Grade 7 - wear RED

Grade 8 - wear BLUE

Please contact Mrs. Nichols (anichols@beverlyschools.org) with any questions.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
BMS 8th Grade Peer Leaders

Reminders from BMS Principal

Fundraiser Next Week
We have a fundraiser occurring next Thursday and Friday to benefit Family Promise. Grade 5 wears Orange, Grade 6 wears Green, Grade 7 wears Red and Grade 8 wears Blue. Bring in $1 or more to donate!

Pickup and Dropoff Traffic Reminders
Also, we continue to work on drop off and pick up as well as bike safety. Today, we were fortunate to have a number of police officers with us to help with the traffic flow on Cabot Street. I do respectfully ask that students are not dropped off in the back parking lot with an attempt to leave the campus at the rear of the building. The only exit on campus in the morning is on to Cabot Street.

Bike Safety
We are concerned about student safety while riding bikes in the community. Many students do not wear helmets and are at risk for major injury. Please see the Mass Bike Website for information.

School Vacation Week
Please make your calendars for winter break. There will be no school Feb 15 - Feb 19th.

Extra Meals Given Out Monday, Feb. 1

Due to the potential winter storm forecasted to hit the area this afternoon and Tuesday the Food Service Department is being proactive and ensuring all families have food in case the forecast is accurate.

Today, Monday February 1, we will be handing out 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches at Beverly High School and will be extending our hours to allow families picking up students from elementary schools to come to the High School for additional meals in case Tuesday is a remote learning day. We will be distributing at Beverly High School today, Monday 2/1 from 10:30-12:30.

This is just a precaution to ensure all families have food in case the forecast is correct. There will still be meals provided on Tuesday if school is in person.

Please reach out with any questions or concerns at 978-921-6132 ext 11129.

Mass Support COVID-19 Coping Groups

Our guidance counselors would like to share information about a resource meant for adults.

Coping groups bring together people who are going or who have gone through similar life experiences. In MassSupport's new free and confidential COVID-19 online coping groups, discussions will focus on how to handle feelings of isolation and stress in a supportive space to enhance coping skills and foster a sense of connection. Groups will last about 90 minutes and participants do the vast majority of the talking. A brief educational component is included. While our trained, caring counselors and clinicians facilitate, these groups are not therapy. Coping groups are completely free, and you can sign up below for multiple groups.

Coping group for those feeling isolated
Coping group for those with children being schooled remotely
Coping group for COVID-19 survivors
Coping group for healthcare and mental health providers

Student Survey

We are surveying our students to find out more about what they like and what they feel like they need from us. Please ask your child if they have filled out the survey emailed to them by Mrs. Oliver recently.  They can also follow this link but must be logged in with their bhsconnect.org email to complete it (so they would not be able to do it on your device, but you could email it or otherwise share it with them).

Dear BMS Students,

We would like to hear your voice! At this time, we are about half way through the 2020-2021 school year. As your principal, I want you to know that I am listening for your voice and that each of you are contributors to our community. During a year that is anything but typical, it is more important than ever that I hear from you. I want to know what makes BMS a great place to be and also how we can improve.

My goal for you is to feel both physically and emotionally safe, while learning both academics and who you are becoming as a human. You are all amazing in your own unique way!

I look forward to reading your responses.
Best,
Mrs. Oliver
BMS Principal

Postcrossing Update

We continue to send postcards to people all over the world - and we've gotten some great ones back too! You can see them here at the BMS Postcrossing blog. We got a card from Finland this past week.

What is Postcrossing? You can find out more tomorrow (Tuesday 1/26) at 7pm in a session that Ms. Woznick is doing at the Beverly Public Library with BHS Librarian Mrs. Fecteau and a fellow Postcrosser from Watertown who has sent and receieved more than 2500 postcards! Click here to find out more and to sign up to get a Zoom link.

Students who are interested in sending Postcrossing postcards through BMS should contact Ms. Woznick at awoznick@beverlyschools.org.

Message from Our Principal

This message from BMS Principal Lisa Oliver went out on Friday. It is replicated here for your reference.

Dear BMS Families,

We have a few updates for you to be aware of this week.

First, I would like you to know that there will be some adjustments to the schedules in each grade level within the hybrid model. This is to expand the opportunity to participate in the connect-in times to live classes on remote days. This will also allow students to make more connections to both their teachers and peers while working remotely. Please watch for communication from your child's teacher and/or assistant principal to explain in more detail.

Also, please be aware that we are looking to address some traffic challenges we are experiencing during drop off. Safety is of the utmost importance for our students and we ask that everyone please adhere to the protocols we have in place. We again ask that you only drop your child off in the live drop off or the Cummings Center. This is to ensure the safety of all.

As always, if you have any questions please email me at loliver@beverlyschools.org
Have a wonderful weekend!

Best,
Lisa Oliver
BMS Principal
