Book of the Day: Bad Girls of Fashion

Bad Girls of Fashion: Style Rebels from Cleopatra to Lady Gaga by by Jennifer Croll & Ada Buchholc

From Hoopla: "Clothes make the woman – and can change the world. The title says it all: Bad Girls of Fashion explores the lives of ten famous women who have used clothing to make a statement, change perceptions, break rules, attract power, or express their individuality. Included are Cleopatra, Marie Antoinette, Coco Chanel, Marlene Dietrich, Madonna, and Lady Gaga. Sidebar subjects include: Elizabeth I, Marilyn Monroe, Rihanna, and Vivienne Westwood. Photos illuminate the text, while edgy, vividly colored illustrations depict the subjects with interpretive flair. Readers will learn not only about changing fashion styles through history, but about changing historical attitudes toward women, and the links between fashion and art, film, music, politics, and feminism. With an energetic, appealing writing style, Croll demonstrates how through the ages, women – often without other means of power – have used fashion as a tool, and how their influence continues to shape how women present themselves today.

BMS Librarian Ms. Woznick is recommending a book a day! All Books of the Day are available online. You can get get the ebook from Hoopla of Bad Girls of Fashion if you have a Beverly Public Library Card. Want a physical book? Check with Copper Dog Books or the Book Shop of Beverly Farms.

Book of the Day: Kings of the Court

Kings of the Court by by Allison Hughes

Kings of the Court

From Hoopla: "When the Gladiators basketball team's nasty coach finally gets turfed midseason, things couldn't possibly get worse. The team hasn't won a game yet, and morale is at rock bottom. Sameer, who announces the games and keeps score, and Vijay, the team mascot, have their hands full keeping the team's spirits up. When they get promoted to assistant coach and manager, can they help a small, unathletic, Shakespeare-quoting drama teacher coach the team to victory, or at least to dignity?
