Announcement: Beverly Keeps Reading!

The Beverly Public Library, in conjunction with the Beverly Public Schools’ librarians (Ms. Woznick at BMS and Mrs. Fecteau at BHS) are pleased to announce the BEVERLY KEEPS READING program.

This city-wide challenge is designed to keep everyone in Beverly reading while we're at home practicing social distancing. We're in this together and we want Beverly to read 5,000 books this spring

Patrons of all ages can participate by tracking their reading using an app/website called Beanstack. The reward? The pleasure of a good book, better reading skills -- but also, by using Beanstack, you can accumulate badges that will automatically enter you in weekly prize drawings from some of Beverly’s local businesses.

Super SubThe first drawing will be held on Friday, April 17. Anyone registered by the time of the drawing will qualify. There will be four $25 gift cards from Super Sub awarded for this first drawing -- two for adults and two for children under 18. This week's prizes are donated by the Friends of the Beverly Public Library and Super Sub!

We are grateful for the federal funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners to support this platform.

More information is available at the BEVERLY KEEPS READING web page.

Virtual Book Clubs

The Beverly Public Library is having a Virtual Teen Book Club on Thursday, April 30 from 2-3pm via Google Hangouts! Meghan (Beverly Public Library Teen Librarian) will host and Ms. Woznick will be joining in for a discussion of Jackaby by William Ritter. Jackaby is available in eBook and digital audiobook on hoopla– no wait!

Participants must register with their school email address. An email invitation will be sent to participants the morning of the event.

Jackaby descriptionNewly arrived in New Fiddleham, New England, 1892, and in need of a job, Abigail Rook meets R. F. Jackaby, an investigator of the unexplained with a keen eye for the extraordinary–including the ability to see supernatural beings. Abigail has a gift for noticing ordinary but important details, which makes her perfect for the position of Jackaby’s assistant. On her first day, Abigail finds herself in the midst of a thrilling case: A serial killer is on the loose. The police are convinced it’s an ordinary villain, but Jackaby is certain the foul deeds are the work of the kind of creature whose very existence the local authorities–with the exception of a handsome young detective named Charlie Cane–seem adamant to deny.

Another book club that may interest you is for Museum of Science members. Starting Monday, April 13, each Monday at 10:00 a.m. a new chapter of a brand-new book, Case of the Covid Crisis will be published in their Google Classroom, then you can join in on Thursdays at 3:00 pm for a group discussion and interactive activities! Kids will learn about coronavirus and how it is affecting everyone, through the adventures of Mae and Clinton, travel through space and time, along with their own personal “Dudette” (mentor) from the future, Selectra Volt, to discover the science and math behind the pandemic.  To register, go to Google Classroom and use the code n3r64re to join.

With over 1,800 responses, parents' results weighed heavily in favor of remaining open (80% in favor of continuing with the remote learning). The School Committee voted, and it was decided that the Beverly Schools will continue with remote learning on April 21st to April 24th. We will not have a scheduled day Monday, April 20th in observance of Patriot’s Day. This now means that our last scheduled day of school for the 2020-2021 school year is Friday, June 19th

Sunday Night Update from the Superintendent

Below is a copy of the letter  and documents sent out on Sunday night by the Superintendent,  Dr. Charochak.

Good Afternoon Beverly Parents and Families,

I hope that you were able to get some sunshine this weekend - while being careful to observe physical distancing. Tonight, I am sharing with you the next phase of our Extended Remote Learning Plan. We know we will never be able to replicate a traditional learning day but we hope with each iteration of our platform, you will find the learning both enjoyable and fulfilling for your child. Attached here is a letter from me and a copy of the Beverly Keeps Learning Remote Learning Plan

For parents of Special Education students, you will also find a copy of a letter from Bethany Splansky, our Director of Pupil Personnel Services and Special Education. Please take the time to review the letters and plan and reach out to your teacher, principal or Central Office with any questions you may have.

The letters and plan will also be posted on the Beverly Keeps Learning website.

I also want to remind you that Friday, April 10th is not a recognized school day. As such, teachers will not be sharing lessons, available for video conferencing or holding office hours on Friday. We are all looking forward to working with you throughout the week! I know that our teachers and staff have many wonderful surprises in store for you!

Thank you!

Sue Charochak, Ed. D.
Superintendent of Schools

From Our BMS Family to Yours!

Just in case you haven't seen this video yet (or just want a reason to watch it again!), here's the BMS staff wishing you all well - we miss you! Thanks to Mr. Melanson for putting this video together.

T3 Global Apps

On Monday we shifted to Trimester Three. For Trimester Three we will change from students being assigned Global Apps to all students being assigned a Global Apps Choice Board. The NEW Global Apps Choice Board can be found on the BMS section of the Beverly Keeps Learning website.

We hope that this choice board will increase physical and social emotional health as well as give students an opportunity to seek out enrichment that engages their passions and interests.

Each week the choice board will change. After each choice the students are asked to complete a Google Form and post to our (optional) Padlet page. We can’t wait to see their great work!
