Summer Reading Information

BMS librarian Ms. Woznick has met with 5th and 6th grade classes about summer reading lists and expectations, and is in the process of meeting with 7th grade classes. Mrs. Fecteau, the BHS librarian, visited 8th grade classes last week to review BHS requirements.

We are asking all students entering grades 6, 7 and 8 to read TWO books this summer.
  • One book should be from the lists we provide (unless a student has received other instructions from a teacher)
  • One book should be a graphic novel of the student's choosing.
Students should create ONE response piece after reading the book selected from the summer reading list. There will be a number of different choices for response pieces, which will be available by next week. There is no assignment connected with the graphic novel; students will simply record the title and author and may be asked one or two brief questions about the book in September.

This year, in order to give students broader choices BMS and BHS book lists are labeled as "recommended" for grade 5 and up, grade 7 and up or grade 9 and up. Students at either school may select a book off of any one of these three listsHowever, parents and students should be aware that some subject matter or reading levels from lists that are higher than what is recommended for a student's grade may or may not be appropriate, depending on the child.  And books that are on lower grade reading lists are not necessarily "easier." We encourage you to be an active participant in your child's summer reading selection -- consider reading the book or listen to an audiobook as a family.

Note: There are no summer reading requirements for students entering grade 5. They are strongly encouraged to read off the grade 5+ list we provide and/or the public library list, and to participate in the Beverly Public Library summer reading program in the children's room.

Information about summer reading is posted at https://beverlymssummerreading.blogspot.com/ and will be updated regularly.
