Book of the Day: I Am Still Alive

I Am Still Alive by Kate Marshall

I Am Still Alive
Description From Hoopla: "After: Jess is alone. Her cabin has burned to the ground. She knows if she doesn't act fast, the cold will kill her before she has time to worry about food. But she is still alive-for now. Before: Jess hadn't seen her survivalist, off-the-grid dad in over a decade. But after a car crash killed her mother and left her injured, she was forced to move to his cabin in the remote Canadian wilderness. Just as Jess was beginning to get to know him, a secret from his past paid them a visit, leaving her father dead and Jess stranded. After: With only her father's dog for company, Jess must forage and hunt for food, build shelter, and keep herself warm. Some days it feels like the wild is out to destroy her, but she's stronger than she ever imagined. Jess will survive. She has to. She knows who killed her father . . . and she wants revenge."

Special Message from the. Superintendent

In case you missed it, the following message went out today to families.

Good Afternoon Beverly Parents and Families,

I want to reach out to all of you today and share our sadness and outrage at the horror and injustice surrounding the death of George Floyd. The unrest of this past week has further exposed the truth about racial disparities in our country.

We in the Beverly schools will work against racism. We are prepared to do the work against bias and stereotype, and work to make all our students and families feel safe and valued. In conjunction with the Human Rights Committee, we stand in unity and support for our friends and colleagues for whom racism is a daily challenge. There is no place in our community for hate. The Beverly Public Schools will continue to embrace our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racist practices in our effort to break the cycle of racism and other forms of oppression.

Attached you will find some resources to help you when talking with your child about the events that are going on in the country today. Further anti-racism resources will be available on our website tomorrow.
Thank you,

Sue Charochak
Superintendent of Schools

In the next two weeks, students will participate in online English Language Arts and Math assessments. The assessments are similar to other online tests the children participated in earlier this fall and winter. Additional information with specific dates/times and directions for accessing the test will be provided to your child. We appreciate your assistance in creating a secure testing environment.

The results from the At Home Assessment will provide important overall course performance and information and measure end of year mastery of learning standards. In addition to continuing to inform this spring’s instruction, the information will help next year’s teachers to determine how to best support your child in the fall. Please note, this assessment is only one of the multiple measures we use to make instructional decisions.

Please see this letter for more details and suggestions.

Book of the Day: Bad Girls of Fashion

Bad Girls of Fashion: Style Rebels from Cleopatra to Lady Gaga by by Jennifer Croll & Ada Buchholc

From Hoopla: "Clothes make the woman – and can change the world. The title says it all: Bad Girls of Fashion explores the lives of ten famous women who have used clothing to make a statement, change perceptions, break rules, attract power, or express their individuality. Included are Cleopatra, Marie Antoinette, Coco Chanel, Marlene Dietrich, Madonna, and Lady Gaga. Sidebar subjects include: Elizabeth I, Marilyn Monroe, Rihanna, and Vivienne Westwood. Photos illuminate the text, while edgy, vividly colored illustrations depict the subjects with interpretive flair. Book of the Day: Kings of the Court

Kings of the Court by by Allison Hughes

Kings of the Court

From Hoopla: "When the Gladiators basketball team's nasty coach finally gets turfed midseason, things couldn't possibly get worse. The team hasn't won a game yet, and morale is at rock bottom. Sameer, who announces the games and keeps score, and Vijay, the team mascot, have their hands full keeping the team's spirits up. When they get promoted to assistant coach and manager, can they help a small, unathletic, Shakespeare-quoting drama teacher coach the team to victory, or at least to dignity? Book of the Day: Forward Me Back To You

Forward Me Back to You by Mitali Perkins

The award-winning author of You Bring the Distant Near explores identity, homecoming, and the legacy of assault in this personal and ambitious new novel. Katina King is the reigning teen jujitsu champion of Northern California, but she's having trouble fighting off the secrets in her past. Robin Thornton was adopted from an orphanage in India and is reluctant to take on his future. If he can't find his roots, how can he possibly plan ahead? Robin and Kat meet in the most unlikely of places—a summer service trip to Kolkata to work with survivors of human trafficking. As bonds build between the travelmates, Robin and Kat discover that justice and healing are tangled, like the pain of their pasts and the hope for their futures. You can't rewind life; sometimes you just have to push play. In turns heart wrenching, beautiful, and buoyant, Mitali Perkins's Forward Me Back to You focuses its lens on the ripple effects of violence—across borders and generations—and how small acts of heroism can break the cycle.

BMS Librarian Ms. Woznick is recommending a book a day! All Books of the Day are available online. Book of the Day: House Arrest

House Arrest by K.A. Holt

Timothy is on probation. It's a strange word-something that happens to other kids, to delinquents, not to kids like him. And yet, he is under house arrest for the next year. He must check in weekly with a probation officer and a therapist, and keep a journal for an entire year. And mostly, he has to stay out of trouble. But when he must take drastic measures to help his struggling family, staying out of trouble proves more difficult than Timothy ever thought it would be. By turns touching and funny, and always original, House Arrest is a middlegrade novel in verse about one boy's path to redemption as he navigates life with a sick brother, a grieving mother, and one tough probation officer. (Description from publisher)

BMS Librarian Ms. Woznick is recommending a book a day! All Books of the Day are available online. The ebook and eaudio of House Arrest is available through Overdrive through the library (use the Libby app) or you can also find the eaudio of House Arrest is available from Hoopla with a Beverly Public Library Card. Book of the Day: Village of Scoundrels

Village of Scoundrels by Margi Preus

Village of Scoundrels

A 2020 release, based on the true story of the French villagers in WWII who saved thousands of Jews, this novel tells how a group of young teenagers stood up for what is right. Among them is a young Jewish boy who learns to forge documents to save his mother and later goes on to save hundreds of lives with his forgery skills. There is also a girl who overcomes her fear to carry messages for the Resistance and a boy who smuggles people into Switzerland. But there is always the threat that they will be caught: A policeman is sent to keep an eye on them, German soldiers reside in a local hotel, and eventually the Gestapo arrives, armed with guns and a list of names. As the knot tightens, the young people must race against time to bring their friends to safety.

Margi Preus is the author of West of the Moon, Shadow on the Mountain, and Heart of a Samurai, which was a Newbery Honor book.

Ms. Woznick is recommending a book a day! All Books of the Day are available online. Village of Scoundrels can be downloaded from Hoopla with a Beverly Public Library Card.

Online Safety Tips

The Project Safe Childhood Program in the U.S. Attorney's office has shared some information with us: "As a result of school closings due to COVID-19, children are increasingly using online resources for schoolwork as well as entertainment. Because of this, children may also be more vulnerable to online sexual exploitation. The United States Attorney’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations have partnered to develop an awareness campaign, Think Before You Click, to encourage parents and guardians to discuss internet safety with children of all ages and to continue to monitor internet use."

Looking for some other tips to help keep your kids safe while they are spending extra time online these days? Common Sense media has lots of parent resources relating to internet safety, including this recent article: How to Tell Who Your Kid Is Talking to Online—and How to Keep Their Convos Cool.
