Global Read Aloud Starts Monday/Tuesday

Ms. Woznick is participating in this year's Global Read Aloud with the book Prairie Lotus by Newbery Award-winning author Linda Sue Park. She will be reading it on Google Meet starting on Monday, October 5.

Students who would like to participate would listen in at home 3 times a week as we read the book and times are set to accommodate both Cohort A and Cohort B students. The read aloud is scheduled for times when many, although not all students are scheduled for independent work, lunch, or Global Apps. This is a Global Apps choice and it may also count as an independent reading option for many teachers.

See this presentation for more information about Global Read Aloud and the book. In order to participate, students must enroll in a Google Classroom - the link is in the presentation. (It's not exactly a "class" but this is an easy way to keep things organized and private.) They must enroll from a device logged into the student's school login.

Students do not need to have a copy of the book to participate, but if you would like to purchase one, Copper Dog Books in downtown Beverly is offering us a special 20% off coupon code for this title! Simply search for Prairie Lotus (or go directly to this page) and put the book in your shopping cart. When you have completed your order and go to checkout, put in the coupon code READALOUD. You will have a choice of having the book shipped to your home, or you can also opt for free in-store pickup or home delivery within 5 miles.

For more information, contact the BMS librarian, Ms. Woznick at awoznick@beverlyschools.org.

Charging problems with iPads?

If your child is having problems with having their iPad charge fully/correctly, we have a list of steps to figure out if the problem is with:

1. The iPad: Power on the iPad. While holding down the home button , press and hold the power button. Keep both buttons pressed until the iPad restarts. Does it power on or charge now?

2. The wall socket (or outlet strip): Move items 1,3 & 4 to another room (a different wall socket). Does it charge now?

3. The charger block: Swap your charger with another charger for an iPad or iPhone. Does it charge now? (Note : it will charge very slowly with a 5W iPhone charger, but it will charge. iPad chargers are 12W)

4. The charging cord: Swap your cord with another cord for an iPad or iPhone. Does it charge now?

These steps should help you isolate where the issue is. If you have further problems, check with the BMS Tech department at bmstech@beverlyschools.org and tell them which of these steps you have tried and what the result was.

Today is World Postcard Day!

October 1 is World Postcard Day!

Ms. Woznick has signed up for Postcrossing and has been sending and receiving postcards from all over the world! We are starting to get some students involved in writing some of these cards, or your family may enjoy signing up for their own free membership.

View a blog with the BMS Postcrossing postcards or contact Ms. Woznick if you'd like to know more.

Fall Sports Info

Beverly Athletics is offering intramural cross country and field hockey (gr 7 & 8 only) leagues this fall at the middle school, giving student athletes an opportunity to participate in a sport right on their own campus.

There is no user fee collected for the middle school fall season, but athletes are still required to have registered on the BHS Athletics website. In addition, all student-athletes participating must have an IN-PERSON physical within the last 13 months (must be dated 8/21/19 or later) on file with the athletic office. The physical can be uploaded to RSCHOOLTODAY with the registration or the physical can be emailed to mmorency@beverlyschools.org. Note that despite the pandemic, the Massachusetts DPH will NOT accept physicals via telehealth for fall sports participation.

If you have questions about registration, please direct them to the BHS Athletics office, and not to the coaches, who will be in touch with registrants soon about logistics and practices, currently planned to begin the week of October 5.

Don't Miss Important Emails

We want to be sure you don't miss any important emails! Our administrators often send emails from the Aspen system, which allows them to select certain grade levels, for example. Unfortunately, these emails occasionally land in people's spam/junk boxes.

Please check for emails coming from aspen-sysadmin@myfollett.com (triggered from our Aspen student info system) and email@blackboard.com (triggered from our Blackboard communication system).

Check your email settings to sort these correctly so you don't miss any critical messages during this unprecedented school year.

Student Postcrossing Volunteers Needed!

As of right now Ms. Woznick has four slots available for people who want to write a postcards to someone somewhere in the world through our school Postcrossing account.

What's Postcrossing? Check out this blog with the BMS cards sent and receive, and the Postcrossing website to see more about it.

Student who sign up will be invited, in the order they sign up, to either write a card or to research information about cards we receive. You will get full information and directions from Ms. Woznick at that time, and will have 24-48 hours to respond, after which time the option will be passed to the next person.

Ms. Woznick is also taking donations of postcards at this time. Postcards of Beverly, Boston, other places on the North Shore or in Massachusetts are helpful. We can also use cards that show animals or art or other things that kids might be interested in sending or either children or adults in receiving.  Email Ms. Woznick if you have postcards to donate or questions: awoznick@beverlyschools.org

We currently have four spots for postcard writers this week! And I hope we receive some more cards soon. But the more cards we send out the more we can get back.

Sign up here now.
